Highlights of the Northern Area 5 days/4 nights
Day 1:
We will depart early and make a stop at the Poas Volcano at the 9000-ft. summit, you'll be able to walk through a cloud forest teeming with native plant species and enjoy the breathtaking scenery at the main crater, considered one of the largest in the world. Then we will continue to La Paz Waterfall Gardens , starting
at the Welcome Center, Bernardo's Trail will take you through the beautiful Hummingbird Gardens , proceed to the Orchid houses and the entrance to the forest. As the trail takes you deep into the thick green growth of the forest, pay close attention to the winding vines and indigenous plants which are home to many of the rain forest most colorful feathered creatures. This truly spectacular trail begins with a suspended staircase which creates a path along the vertical cliff face of the Waterfall. The route brigs you to two more viewing balconies which offer great photo opportunities of the many spectacular waterfalls and the river gouge. Lunch and continue to the Arenal Area. Day 2:
Sarapiquí River , Class II & III. La Virgen & Chilamate Section: A delightful day, more than 20 rapids in a spectacular setting in the tropical rain forest. Sarapiquí is the rafters dream; natural whitewater, challenging rapids and crystal clear pools. Enjoy the natural splendor and abundant wildlife. Distance for section around 11 kilometers each one Duration: all day three and a half-hours in the river. At night you will go to the Tabacon Thermal hot springs at the based of the Arenal Volcano. Overnight at GOLD TABACON SILVER VOLCANO LODGE Breakfast - lunch - dinner
Day 3:
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge: Birdwatchers and nature lovers, this is the tour for you! This all day trip takes you to the mighty Rio Frio near the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. One of our professional bilingual guides will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the small town of Los Chiles near the Nicaraguan border. Here we will begin our three-hour ride up the Rio Frio in search of sloths, caimans, lizards, tropical birds, various species of monkeys and much more in the surrounding lush rainforest and wetlands. You will be amazed with the beauty as your guide shows and teaches you about the marvels of the wildlife, vegetation, ecology and culture of this tropical paradise. It certainly is a learning experience and one not to miss. A typical Costa Rican hot lunch is included in this tour and is served on the tranquil banks of the Rio Frio. Day 4
Rio Celeste Volcan Tenorio adventure: The Tenorio National Park is formed by a myriad of natural resources of unparalleled beauty. One of the most attractive features is the Rio Celeste or "Light Blue River" You will encounter a phenomenon of nature and chemistry when you get to the Tenideros (the stainer) which effect is provoked by the emanation of sulphuric gases from the bottom of the river and the precipitation of carbonated calcium delivered by a stream that dumps into the main river at this point. This place is amazing and features a challenging 4-5 hour hike through nature and viewing the light blue river. You will find hot springs that will amaze you with small pools of hot water next to a cold water river. Due to the variable climate , Volcan Tenorio National Park is home to many different species of plants and trees. Some of the most watched species of animals here are: tapir, collared peccary, howler monkey, white-faced monkey, spider monkey, wild cats ( puma, margay and ocelot ), birds like three-wattled bellbird, turkey vultures and different roadside hawks and tanagers. This is the real rainforest with average rainfall of 4.000 millimeters per year. The rainy season is May to January when the average temperature is 24° C ( 75º F ) So get ready to get muddy, wet and amazed with Rio Celeste
Day 5
Horseback riding to the La Fortuna waterfall: This tour offers the perfect combination of beautiful sightseeing and physical activity. We begin with an easy and scenic horseback ride from La Fortuna to the entrance of the waterfall. After viewing the magnificent 40-meter waterfall from a distance, we descend on a challenging hike through the dense rainforest where you will see amazing specimens of flora. The hike will bring us to the base crystal blue pool the waterfall pours into where you will be able to take a wonderful refreshing swim. Transfer in the afternoon to San Jose or your next destination.
