Ix Chel Tropical Research Foundation
Ix Chel , also known as the Rainforest Medicine Trail, is the home of Dr. Rosita Arvigo, who apprenticed for 10 years with Mayan healer, Don Eligio Panti (1891-1996)
This trail could be self-guided or if on tour you will have a guide explaining all the different plants as the trail winds gently above the bank of the Macal River past medicinal plants and introduces visitors to many of the plants and herbs used in traditional Mayan medicine.
The Maya were masters at utilizing the jungle's natural resources for their practical and medicinal needs. Here you will see and learn about vines that store drinking water, plants that helps abate malaria, aid diabetics, cleanse the blood, plus many more. The trails most remarkable feature is that all the plants and trees were already there. The fact that none were planted is a testament to the natural diversity found in the rainforest. You can also walk through a traditional Mayan healers workplace complete with all the necessary tools for the traditional Maya Medicines. This area of the Mopan River is very beautiful and give you the opportunity of view a great deal of the Belize flora and fauna.
