An enjoyable boat ride takes you several miles inland by way of scenic Olde Belize River .

Belize River . You them board your tour bus and drive to Altun Ha (Maya for "Rock Stone Water") where the famous Jade Head knich Ahau" was uncovered by Dr. David
Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum . Altun Ha was once a major trading center
linking the Maya on the Caribbean with the Central American mainland Maya. Altun Ha
played a vital role in costal trade during the Maya Classic Period. Occupied from sometime
in the Pre-Classic at its height Altun Ha had a population of 13,00 surrounding its small ceremonial core of under one square mile. The rich funerary goods found in some of the tombs excavated at the site reflect the power and wealth of its god-king rulers. In the structure
Temple of the Masonry Altars most excavated and well know Mayan temple in Belize ,
unearthed the famous 9.5 pound jade head representing the sun god Knich Ahu. Jade was imported as a highly prized and exotic commodity mined in the Motagua river valley
along the borders between Honduras and Guatemala . Its highly probable that the elite of the area where Altun Ha is located procured, manufacture tools and weapon and exported
high grade flint from the naturally occurring out-crops found in this par of Belize .
