      Undoubtedly the most popular inland excursion from San Pedro !! Talk about adventure! Leisure The ruins of Lamanai, one of Belize's largest ceremonial centers, are located on the banks of the 30 mile long New River Lagoon in North Central Belize. With one of the longest occupation spans in the Maya World, Lamanai has been continuously occupied for over 3000 years. The Lamanai Archaeological Reserve also contains a museum, the remnants of two 16th century Spanish churches and a colonial sugar mill that was established in 1860. Set in tropical forest and providing spectacular views from several of its large temples, Lamanai provides a unique experience in the culture of the Maya and the biological diversity of a tropical forest. tour of this uninhabited natural wonderland of bird life.
     
     Have a delightful breakfast as you wind your way through the Northern River and enjoy the early morning sights and sounds. At the tiny village of Bomba you will board a bus that will take you through the mainland forests and on to Tower Hill. From Tower Hill your journey down the New River to Lamanai will begin. Along the Archaeological interests at Lamanai include Maya settlement from 1500 B.C., the Spanish colonial period, British sugar mill operations in the 1850's, focus on Maya architecture, archaeology of animal bones found at Maya sites (zooarchaeology), ancient diet and health of the Maya, ceramic chronology and microscopic analysis, the analysis and use of flint sculptures, iconography and Maya metallurgy.way you are likely to encounter a rich variety of indigenous animals like crocodiles, monkeys, and birds.
  
   At Lamanai you will get a guided tour of the Majestic ruins that perch on the waters edge. The ancient site of Lamanai, set inside the pristine rainforest of this area.
    
   Lunch is by the beach, and exploration afterwards takes you along nature paths to various temples.
