Day 02: - Full day tour to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve and Caracol Maya site .
Depart today on a full day tour to Caracol Maya Ruins. Discovered in 1938 and later explored in the 1950's. Caracol was thought to be little more than a Maya ceremonial center. It was not until more extensive excavation efforts began in 1985 that the importance and expanse of Caracol became known. In 1986, a round elaborately carved altar stone was uncovered which described a victory by Caracol over Tikal , once considered to be the most powerful Maya metropolis. This discovery filled an important missing piece of Maya history and positioned Caracol as the "supreme" Maya city. The largest pyramid, the Canaa (Maya for "sky palace"), rises 140 feet and is the tallest man-made structure in all of Belize .

The Maya were masters at utilizing the jungle's natural resources for their practical and medicinal needs. Here you will see and learn about vines that store drinking water, plants that helps abate malaria, aid diabetics, cleanse the blood, plus many more. The trails most remarkable feature is that all the plants and trees were already there. The fact that none were planted is a testament to the natural diversity found in the rainforest. You can also walk through a traditional Mayan healers workplace complete with all the necessary tools for the traditional Maya Medicines.
Atop the Vaca Plateau in Black Rock Canyon overlooking the Macal River in the Cayo District, rests a small subsistence farm belonging to the Moralez family, who only recently discovered a cave on their property while hunting with their dogs. You can imagine their amazement when, upon later exploring the cave, they found over sixty intact Maya jars and other pottery that have remained undisturbed since the cave was abandoned around 900 A.D. After a short briefing by the local guide, we were equipped with flashlights and led up a rather steep trail through the jungle, on a 20-30 minute hike to the mouth of the cave.

While traveling the many little creeks and lagoons, it is easy to encounter hawks, kites, falcons or a monkey or two. At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai rise into view. The ruins of Lamanai, one of Belize 's largest ceremonial centers, are located on the banks of the 30 mile long New River Lagoon in North Central Belize.  While touring this site, huge masks depicting dead rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest, amid the chatter of bid-life and the haunting call of the Howler Monkeys.
