The Stann Creek District is Belize's second largest district, with an area of 986 square miles. Here exists the heart of the Garifuna culture in Belize. This culture evolved over a period of 350 years from an isolated mixture of Caribbean Indians and Africans. The Garifuna came to Belize from Roatan in 1832 and have been here ever since.
Stann Creek is Belize's second largest district with 986 square miles of possibilities for the adventure inclined traveler. The coast is dotted with small towns and fishing villages that offer cultural flavors in exotic combination, and access to crowd free cayes as well as the remote reaches of the Belize Barrier Reef. Beginning just a few miles inland, the territory hosts Maya villages, the world's first jaguar preserve, a wealth of tropical forests, and a good portion of the Maya Mountains including Victoria Peak. Stann Creek is a coastal district in the south of Belize. It has many rivers and is at the foothill of the Mayan Mountains. It has moderate seasonal rainfall and has been highly developed for the production of citrus and banana products. It's terrain ranges from coastal savanna to rocky foothills.
The Stann Creek district has recently blossomed due to the upgrade of roads leading to the south of the country. The agricultural development has been mostly of a corporate nature with three large companies producing the majority of the citrus.
The residents of Stann Creek are mostly Garifunas, who are the descendants of Carib Indians and Africans Slaves that migrated to Belize and other Mainland Countries from St. Vincent and other Caribbean Islands.
Stann Creek shares the Cockscomb nature Reserve with the Toledo District. There are also a number of caves off the coast which are excellent for diving.
