The Belize Barrier Reef in the Outer Islands, the second largest in the world, stretches 190 extraordinary miles from north to south. The Barrier Reef was designated a UNESCO Heritage Site and is considered to be one of the most spectacular natural formations on the planet. The reef attracts a plethora of marine life and serves to protect the integrity of the outer islands and coastline. Historically, its jagged edges served to dissuade all but the most dogged of invading ships. (
