THE
GREAT HOUSE |
| The Great
House is located in the renowned Fort George area and is just 100
meters from the Caribbean Sea. Around the corner stands the historic
Fort Point Lighthouse at the entrance to the Belize Harbor and adjacent
to the Baron Bliss Memorial, which was erected as a monument to
the Englishman, Baron Henry Edward Ernest Victor Bliss. He lived
aboard his yacht "Sea King," which was anchored just off
the Fort George Point. Although he never set foot on Belizean soil,
due to health reasons, he fell in love with the sea, the fishing,
and the charming qualities of its people. On his death on March
9th, 1926, he bequeathed a legacy of over a million dollars to Belize,
then British Honduras, in a "Baron Bliss Trust". The 9th
of March later became a public and bank holiday in this country. |
