The Belize District is the heart of colonial Belize. Its terrain is
coastal swamp extending to savannah inland. The Belize district is not
highly developed as an agricultural area. It is traversed by a number
of rivers and inland lagoons. Weather patterns are generally coastal
i.e. relatively constant with tropical rain patterns. The majority of
the population of the Belize District is urban, living in Belize City.
The original British port settlement was in Belize City. It is the first
capital of the colony of British Honduras. Most of the country's commerce
and trade is centralized here. - (
