sacred valley The Sacred Valley has a much lower elvation than Cusco,
the Valley is a warmer and less pysically taxing environment to start
getting use to the altitue. The mild climate, the varied and dramatic
scenery of snow-capped mountains, flowering meadows, lush green hills
and spectacular flora and
fauna, make the Valley a prime adventure destination and you will enjoy
all of this as you are
This afternoon horseback riding Peruvina Pasas in the sacred valley
guided Enjoy the exhilarating ride that only the Peruvian Paso horse
can give! We visit out-of-the-way Quechua communities and meet the local
people in a natural village setting. (If horseback riding is not your
think them we can offer another tour for this afternoon)
In the evening you will be enchated by your message

Spanish bath. You will have a choice of one of the following Massages
- traditional Swedish massage, Shiatsu, Aromatherapy and Reflexology
massages, Capillary massage or a Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage (Your
choice of one, just let us know which one)
Overnight at Sol y Luna Hotel Ranch and Spa. The bungalows or Muyus
are circles in the sun, with light yellow walls, red-tiled roofs, and
flower-rimmed verandahs. These bungalows are literally made from elements
of the earth in the Valley. All bungalows are constructed with adobe,
wood, stone and clay, typical building materials for this region. We
used eucalyptus and nogal from the woods and forests surrounding the
Sacred Valley and stones that rolled down the mountains near the hotel.
Interiors are also decorated to reflect the Andean setting, with ceramic-tiled
floors, high "sombrero chino" ceilings with wooden beams,
decorative bands of stone work, and assorted curios and details from
local artisans who worked on all aspects of the construction. The bungalows
are set within a Garden of local and international plants and flowers
which give a profusion of color year-around.
Day 3: Overnight at Sol y Luna Hotel Ranch and Spa
Full day tour of the Sacred Valley with your privated guide. We leave
early in the morning and drive about 12,400 feet to reach the village.
As we begin exploring, we notice the differences between this community
and other lower altitude villages in the Sacred Valley: here the houses
are not made of brick and mud; they are simple stone structures without
windows. This is because the whole family works long hours every day
in the fields and the house is simply a warm place to shelter and sleep,
not a place of leisure. We also notice that the crops here are not corn
but other plants more suited to the altitude, such as potatoes, tarwi
and beans. We have a box lunch in the village of Ollantaytambo. Then
we set out exploring once again. The village dates from the fifteenth
century and retains the original Inca layout, the only such village
in Peru. It is laid out in a trapezoid grid (a favorite shape of the
Incas) and then subdivided into numerous canchas, rectangular courtyards
surrounded by houses. We also visit the
famous Inca ruins cut into the mountain above the village. There are
many legends about these ruins: some say that they are the tambo or
lodge of Ollantay, a local chieftain who nursed a forbidden love for
the daughter of the great Inca Pachacuteq; others say that this was
the place owned by the panaca or royal family of Pachacuteq; and still
others believe the tambo refers to an Pre-Inca tribe that occupied the
area. What is known for sure is that Ollantaytambo was probably the
site of a decisive battle between the Spaniards and Manco Inca who successfully
defeated them by flooding the valley and then escaping into his jungle
fortress Vilcabamba, where he stayed for
Day 4: Hiram Bingham Luxury Train Linking Cusco and Machu Picchu
At around noon, on July 23, 1911, the Hawaiian-born Yale and Harvard
educated historian Hiram Bingham first brought Machu Picchu to the attention
of the world, rediscovering what had been up until that moment, the
Incas best kept secret. Step aboard the Hiram Bingham, and follow those
historic footsteps in the new luxury train service which bears the crest
of the man who might very well have been the first tourist to Machu
Picchu. Using carriages purchased in Singapore, and refurbished in Peru,
this daily addition to PeruRail's existing fleet of Vistadome, backpacker
and local services on the Cuzco Machu Picchu route, has been given a
distinctive blue and gold livery colour with elegant interior upholstery
in warm, inviting tones. The Hiram Bingham will depart Cuzco at 09:00
a.m. which gives a more leisurely start to the day than the traditional
06:00 a.m. departures of other services. Brunch will be served on board
whilst travellers enjoy the spectacular scenery unfolding before them
from the large windows, and the arrival in Machu Picchu at 12:30 p.m.
gives Hiram Bingham passengers the advantage of entering the Sanctuary
at an hour when the majority of the visitors are already beginning to
leave for their journey back to Cuzco. Thus, Hiram Bingham passengers
will not only have the opportunity to experience the Ruins at Machu
Picchu in relative solitude, but will have a longer period of time there,
returning to the train only as the sun goes down.

This spectacular rail journey begins in historic Cuzco (Cusco) and travels
south to the beautiful city
of Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca.
On the journey the train makes a gentle climb to higher, and cooler,
altitudes. The first half of
the journey is dominated by the magnificent Andean mountains which tower
over the deep valleys
of the meandering Huatanay River. It then reaches the gentler, rolling
Andean Plains, where
vicuña and alpaca can be seen. If travelling aboard the Andean
Explorer, the glass-walled
observation car provides the perfect opportunity to view the beautiful
scenery. The journey is
broken by a scenic stop at La Raya, which is also the highest point
on the route.

Day 08: Lake Titicaca - Puno Uros Indians
Privade tour of the Uros and Tanquile Islands -
You will be picked up from your hotel in Puno around 6:40 AM, after
2 hours motorboat you will
arrive at the Uros island. Fishermen and hunters inhabit the floating
islands of the Uros. The
residents of the Uros use the cattail, a type of rush, which grows in
the lake, to create the
conditions that ensure the islands stay afloat. The dense roots that
the plants develop support the
island. The roofs are waterproof and the houses are extremely humid
because of the surrounding
water. At present they speak Quechua and Aymara. Then we will visit
the Taquile island, including
lunch in the cooperative restaurant, there is also a cooperative shop
on the plaza that sells
exceptional woollen goods which are not cheap but of very fine quality.
Taquile Island is famous
for its craft production, particularly for its beautiful textiles. The
island is narrow at about 1 Km.
wide and 6 to 7 Km. long. The visit could be exhausting because of the
533 steps on the stone
stairway to climb to get to the village and because of the altitude
(13,000 ft above sea level). On
Taquile there are numerous pre-Inca and Inca ruins as well as Inca terracing.
We will return in
Puno in the afternoon.
