It's not quite easy to recommend the best time of the year to visit Easter Island. Spring (Oct.-Dec.) and autumn (March-May) are a very good time to travel; temperatures never go higher than aprox. 24°C, only some rainfall. In winter (May-Sept.) more rain, still temperatures between 18-21°C during the day. These seasons have the advantage that there are not so many tourists on the Island. In summer (January-beginning of March) the temperatures could rise up to 28-31°C and the Pacific Ocean invites for a swim in its warm waters. Easter Island is in the temperate zone, at 27° 9' south latitude. Thus it is out of the tropics, so do not expect to find the kind of climate one normally associates with Pacific islands such as Tahiti. While it rarely gets any hotter than 85°F [29.4°C], it can feel very muggy and uncomfortable in the austral Summer (December-March). Winters are mild, with a low of around 57°F [13.8°C], but it can feel a lot colder than that with the wind-chill factored in. The wind blows constantly, sometimes from several directions at once. This tends to keep the temperature fairly cool. The visitor to the island is advised to take along a windbreaker, sweater, sweatshirt, and a hat with chin straps to keep it from blowing off. Hiking boots are recommended. The island is very rocky and once off the designated roads or paths, it can be rough walking.

Rainfall averages around 44" [1,118 mm] a year, but this is variable. Some droughts have been reported. Heavy rainfall and storms occasionally hit the island, particularly in the Winter months (June-August) but cyclones or hurricanes do not occur in this part of the Pacific.
