In most places you will therefore be able to find "artesian" as well as local markets selling handmade local products, ranging from the world renowned alpaca sweaters and jumpers to beautifully made silver and Lapis Lazuli jeweler all with a distinct Andean style, for very reasonable prices.
In contrast to many other places these handmade products are primarily meant for the local market and widely used by the Chileans themselves rather then being mass produced "tourist quality" souvenirs and good buys can often be found in the most unlikely places.
Shop for blankets, lapis lazuli (the best stones are in Antofagasta), choapinos (wool rugs), earthenware pottery, models of Easter Island statues, shell necklaces, cashmere sweaters, shoes, linen, bronzes, purses, sterling-silver jewelry, embroidered handkerchiefs, Chilean wines, Talagante ceramics and copper products.
Larger stores in cities have fixed prices, but bargaining is the norm at shops and markets in smaller villages.
Good bargains in woven goods (made from llama and alpaca hair) can be purchased from women in villages and small towns.
In Chile, it is possible to buy a huge variety of products in all kinds of stores. In the bigger cities it is typical to find big malls and shopping centers, but it is also possible to find smaller and more specialized stores. Across the country you can observe different artistic and cultural traditions and as a result, crafts change from one area to another, integrating specific characteristics from each place. These can be purchased in small shops and stores in each town.
For camping, climbing and other outdoor sports, there are specialized shops in Santiago, as well as in the main centers where the sports or activities are practiced.
Punta Arenas is home to a duty-free shopping center called the Zona Franca, with several blocks of shops hawking supposedly cheaper electronics, home appliances, imported foodstuffs, sporting goods, perfumes, clothing, toys, booze, and cigarettes. The savings here are negligible, except for alcohol, and the selection isn't what you'd hope for, although there certainly is a lot on offer, including a few supermarkets. Really, this is a good place to stock up on supplies if you're planning a backpack trip to Torres del Paine -- otherwise, forget it. The Zona Franca is located on Avenida Manuel Bulnes, just outside town. Because of its proximity to the Museo del Recuerdo, you might want to tie a visit in here with that attraction; take a taxi to get there. It's open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 12:30pm and 3 to 8pm, and closed Sunday and holidays.
