Puno Bordering Lake Titicaca, the small town Puno (pop. approx. 100,000) functions as an ideal positioning night en route to Cusco or Arequipa . The main attractions are the Uros floating reed islands and Taquille and Amantani islands. While a day trip is possible to the later two, it is preferable to spend a night on one of them. A visit to the impressive funerary towers (chullpas) of the pre-inca Sillustani Cemetery , on;y 30 kms from Puno, is best in the afternoon though also fits in with transfer in/out of Jullaca airport, an hour away.
Cusco: Capital of the Inca Empire, with its Christian churches, many preserving fine baroque art, constructed over the Temples of the Sun and Moon obtaining a superposition of belief, is a city of extraordinary cultural richness. Beside the city itself, its proximity to Machu Picchu makes Cusco un-missable for art, archaeology and history lovers.
